Bonded and Insured: How We Store

The least glamorous part of cask ownership is also the most important. A rare cask is only as secure as the warehouse it sits in and the records that follow it. Storage is where ownership is either quietly protected or slowly eroded, and it is the part of the process we take most seriously.

What in bond actually means

Every cask we hold matures in an HMRC-approved bonded warehouse. Held in bond, the spirit sits under customs supervision, with excise duty and VAT suspended for as long as it matures. Nothing is payable while the whisky rests; duty and VAT fall due only if and when the cask is bottled, at the rate in force at that time. It is a long-standing arrangement, and it is why cask whisky can mature for decades without a tax bill arriving each year.

Insured, and accounted for

While in bond, each cask is individually accounted for and insured. It is not a barrel in a crowd; it is a numbered asset tied to your delivery order, with an unbroken record of ownership from the day it becomes yours. If you ask where your cask is, we can tell you the warehouse, the location and the paperwork behind it.

Stewardship, not just storage

Good stewardship is quiet. It means checking that the wood is doing its work, re-racking a cask into fresh oak when the maturation calls for it, and telling you plainly when it does not. It means the same attention whether you hold a cask for five years or fifty. We would rather recommend patience than a change that only generates activity.

The point of all this

None of this is designed to impress. It is designed so that, years from now, your cask is exactly where it should be, in the condition it should be in, and provably yours.

Cask whisky is a tangible asset held in your name, but it is unregulated and illiquid; value can fall as well as rise, and any tax treatment depends on your circumstances and may change. Nothing here is financial or tax advice. Careful storage will not guarantee a return. It will make sure that whatever your cask becomes, it remains unmistakably yours.
